QUEERING THE ALPHABET

Overview: Queering the Alphabet is is an A-Z zine that profiles queer and trans people of color currently involved in direct political activism. Imprint Projects, a creative agency based in New York City, chose SPICY as a collaborator and funded the production of this zine as part of their 2019 Pride Project Initiative.

Process: Between the months of May and June, my team and I shot and interviewed 13 women of color and queer/trans people of color currently working in direct political activism to represent a letter of the alphabet. The other 13 letters were dedicated to historical people and places that were integral to shaping the LGBTQ civil rights movement, such as Marsha P. Johnson and Rockland Palace. Inspired by children’s alphabet board books, including classics such as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, we wanted this zine to be educational yet playful. Although the history and work of these individuals were definitely challenging, it was also important for us to focus in on their strength, perseverance, and empowerment through a vibrant color story and animated graphic treatment.

Results: You can now find Queering the Alphabet in Cafe con Libros, Blue Stockings, New York Public Library, and more. We received an overwhelming amount of love and appreciation for this zine which resonated with so many members in our community.
